LEGO Show announces world record attempt

The LEGO® Show will be attempting to break the world record for the largest ever built LEGO mosaic when it comes to Manchester in May, and will be enlisting the aid of visitors to the show to help build it.
The LEGO® Show, the largest in the UK, is aiming to make a 143m2 image containing approximately 550,000 LEGO® bricks when it comes to EventCity, Manchester on 5th to 7th May 2012. To complete the mosaic, the show organisers will need at least 2,000 members of the public to help by building a mosaic square, giving visitors the unique chance to be part of an official world record.
The record, officially entitled ‘the largest image built with interlocking plastic bricks’, currently stands at 112m2, and was made by DK Publishing House (UK) in London, UK in 2010.
Warren Elsmore, show director, said: “We are really excited about this world record attempt, and it will be fantastic to get the general public involved. We’ve only got three days to complete a mosaic of over half a million bricks, so we really need the help!”
In keeping with the sporting fever that is gripping the UK during 2012, the mosaic’s image will showcase sports related LEGO® minifigures from some of LEGO®’s series of collectable minifigures.
Warren added: “It’s a big year for sport, so it seemed fitting to incorporate it into the mosaic.”
The LEGO® Show, Manchester, is the only show in the country to feature LEGO® designers direct from Denmark and Bright Bricks, the UK’s first and only LEGO® certified professionals.
Already confirmed for this year’s show are a special display from the Discovery Centre, specialist building workshops, LEGO® Brand store, LEGO® brick marketplace, a special 2012 celebratory build, LEGO® cinema, play areas and of course a spectacular fan display.
The LEGO® Show 2012 takes place at EventCity from 5 – 7 May. Tickets are now on sale and a family can save £10 by buying their ticket in advance.
Find LEGO Show on Facebook or follow @LEGOShow on Twitter to keep up to date with the latest show news.

I'm guessing that the mosiac will be the picture above, which was included with the press release. It certainly fits the description. Brickset's very own Martin creates the instructions for these massive mosaics so no doubt he will be able to confirm!

#1 Welcome to BJRs Lego News Daily

Hi

Welcome to BJRs Lego News Daily

Each Week I post : Review, News, Vintage Collection, MOCs, Lego Show, And More

I do Post on Lego,Mega Bloks,Kre-o,and any thing got to do with the Plastic Brick.

Here Is A Brief History of Lego.

he LEGO Company had its beginnings in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, a poor carpenter from Billund, Denmark. Ole Kirk started creating wooden toys in 1932, but it wasn't until 1949 that the famous plastic LEGO brick was created.
The company name LEGO was coined by Christiansen from the Danish phrase leg godt, meaning "play well". The LEGO Group claims that "LEGO" means "I put together" or "I assemble" in Latin, though this is a rather liberal translation; the more accepted and widely used application of the word is "I read". It should be noted, however, that the original, Greek verb "legein" actually has the meaning "put together".
In 1947, Ole Kirk and his son Godtfred obtained samples of interlocking plastic bricks produced by the company Kiddicraft. These "Kiddicraft Self-Locking Building Bricks" were designed and patented in the UK by Mr. Hilary Harry Fisher Page, a child psychologist. A few years later, in 1949, LEGO began producing similar bricks, calling them "Automatic Binding Bricks." These bricks, manufactured from cellulose acetate, were developed in the spirit of traditional wooden blocks that could be stacked upon one another; however, these plastic bricks could be "locked" together. They had several round "studs" on top, and a hollow rectangular bottom. The blocks snapped together, but not so tightly that they couldn't be pulled apart.
The use of plastic for toy manufacture was not highly regarded by retailers and consumers of the time. Many of the LEGO Group's shipments were returned, following poor sales; it was thought that plastic toys could never replace the wooden monkeys.
By 1954, Christiansen's son, Godtfred, had become the junior managing director of the LEGO Group. It was his conversation with an overseas buyer that struck the idea of a toy system. Godtfred saw the immense potential in LEGO bricks to become a system for creative play, but the bricks still had some problems from a technical standpoint: their "locking" ability was limited, and they were not very versatile. It wasn't until 1958 that the modern-day brick design was developed, and it took another five years to find exactly the right material for it.
Over the years many more LEGO sets, series, and pieces were created, with many innovative improvements and additions, culminating in the colorful versatile building toys that we know today.
